Chapter 12

After the three returned to Lux Investments, the accountants had returned from SID with the ledgers. While looking over them they found accounts with no known source of funding and withdrawals all under ten-thousand dollars, the maximum cash transaction that doesn’t have to be reported to the federal government. They were just waiting for the return of the servers to verify their findings.

“Does this mean that as soon as Venus Lux returns from jail, she’ll be arrested all over again?” Forensic Accountant Harley Tate asked.

“Yes,” Elgie said, “I’m going to have the officer who’s been watching the front door take her back downtown to book her.”

“She won’t like that,” Harley Tate said.

“No, I don’t expect she will,” Elgie said with a smile. “Quinn, Lucas, while we’re waiting to make this official and re-arrest Venus, I’d like you two to take care of some things for me. Quinn, I’d like you to call major crimes and find out if they have a case that would fit our criteria. And Lucas, I’d like you to call Michelle and tell her to order everything we’ll need for a backward barbecue next weekend. You both are invited, of course.”

“Boss, what if we’re busy next weekend?” Quinn asked.

“We need to make time for ourselves at some point, Quinn. The one thing I learned from Vanessa’s death is that I never spent enough time with her. I won’t make the same mistake with you guys and Michelle. I’m going to make you a priority like you should be. By the way, sorry about shutting the door, I just wasn’t in a talking mood, but it’s time to break that. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Lucas.”

“You’re welcome, lieutenant,” Lucas said.

Elgie’s cell phone rang. “This is Lieutenant Reynolds may I help you?”

“No, but I think I can help you. This is Christopher Gower, computer technician.”

“Yes, I know who you are, Chris. I hope you’re about to tell me some good news?”

“I am, sir. We sent the original servers back to Lux Investments a few minutes ago, and they should arrive shortly. On the copies, we found the original documents related to the theft, and they weren’t posted until Friday night. This past Friday to be specific.”

“That would have been the night before McGee was reported missing. This gives us some circumstantial evidence that Venus knew about McGee being missing before the FBI did. Can it be proven that Venus was the one that made the entry?”

“No, the entry was made under the name of, who I understand, is an ex-employee. Anyone could have used that user-name and password.”

“Okay, thanks for the update,” Elgie said.

Elgie, Quinn, and Lucas took seats in the waiting room in anticipation for Venus's return from her trip to jail only to make another one. The waiting room was about as large as Venus’s office. Elgie thought it probably measured at least twelve feet by twelve feet. The seating was eight overstuffed leather chairs that were so comfortable Elgie almost hated to stand up, but he had to.
